PostHeaderIcon How is walking considered a sufficient form of exercise?

I’ve been walking an hour daily 5 days a week, along with 30 minutes of intense cardio 4 days a week. I’ve been reading on several sites about how walking is a great form of exercise when trying to lose weight. But how can brisk walking help you lose weight if you’re not sweating? I just never break out in a sweat when taking a walk, not sure if it’s the cold weather or what. But is brisk walking truly a great way to lose weight? And how?

Walking is one of the best forms of cardio because its the easiest and it raises you heart rate which burns calories and raises your metabolism. Its also the easiest on your joints and muscle. Less could go wrong for your body with walking than any other cardio activity.

Brisk walking is certainly very good exercise and will help to lose a bit of weight but only to a very limited extent.

If you want to lose weight swimming, cycling and running would be far more effective.

Dude – there’s this security guard I knew that worked nights at the computer lab where a friend of mine worked. I would hang out there sometimes on friday nights. Anyhow, a couple years or so go by and I see this gray haired moustached skinny dude in the mall, blazin a trail like there’s a sale on redneck clothes at Sears. Anyhow, it was him…he recognized me. I could barely recognize him…he was so different…he lost huge weight and that’s all he did, briskly walked through the mall. When I told my buddy about this, he told me that yeah the mall people complained and asked him to go there only on certain mornings. That’s all he did was mall-walked.

    Keep on truckin!

Power walk a little more powerful then. I started walking two years ago and could only go for 10 minutes and that was slowly with stopping every ten or twenty steps. I kept increasing my distance till I could go a mile in 30 min. Last Sept I did a 5K in a hour and 20 min. You just have to either increase your amount of time or distance or speed. Try putting some running in there alternating with walking. Pump your arms, get some weights to carry and pump them while you walk for a little more resistance. Or you could find some hills to walk on. Walking will help your circulation and build up your endurance even if you don’t notice it till one day when you need to climb 4 flights of stairs for some emergency reason.

Walking can indeed be a good form of exercise if done properly, however, in my opinion it is not very effective.

Walking is good form of exercise only if a proper diet is strictly used (namely eating less calories than burned). However, walking is one of the slowest forms of cardio that can be done. You body is designed to be able to walk for a long time, so it takes long distance and time to actually get your body to start effectively burning extra fat. On top of that, your body’s metabolism doesn’t change too much since your body isn’t too strained.

Moderate to intense cardio, I believe is the best, simply because it boosts metabolism and strength. While it is true that slow and long cardio burns more fat and overall calories, those calories will quickly be restored during resting time, and the body has to adjust slowly to the gradual loss of fat. It is also very easy to regain this weight. With more intense cardio, the body burns energy quickly and has to adapt even after the workout is done. On top of that, you can increase muscle while reducing fat making it easier to lose the additional pounds.

So in short, yes, walking can be effective if combined with intense cardio as you have done. But just alone, I doubt it is effective.
